This post covers two days travel with our little rental car. We left Beja this morning and did a circle loop around Surpa, Moura, and Porta. It was a dreary rainy day but we had a great drive and got to see the largest dam in Europe. By our standards of the BcHydro dams it seemed quite small but looked well built and had a large head of water behind it. It looks like they are building another generating facility along side the first one, maybe second stage. Apparently they are using the reservoir as an irrigation system for the area as well. We also saw cork being processed for shipping and it is quite an industry here. I hope the new plastic corks don’t overwhelm the cork industry as a lot of people are being employed here processing cork. As we have traveled through Portugal as a whole we have noted the prolific agriculture here. They have grain as well as tons of olive orchards, grape vineyards and oranges, as did Spain. This little town we are staying is very friendly – the hotel is great, and Neil and I even had to break down for haircuts. (see Neil at the Barber Shop! - Not the Barber of Seville mind you!!) Tomorrow we will go to Evora eroute to Lisboa where we will finish our journey!
